Post-baby exercise is hard. Things have changed, shifted, moved and changed some more. You’re never quite sure if everything’s going to stay… together.
I began running four months after Ollie was born and I returned to running six or seven weeks after Hailey arrived. Each effort brought it’s own challenges. Both sets of issues were difficult, both were overcome, and both were worth it all.
Personally, my biggest problem returning after Hailey was that I was so far from where I was pre-pregnancy. It took me a long time to convince myself to be patient. It takes time and it’s still taking time which annoys me but it’s one of those things you have to accept.
Here are 10 thoughts I had on my first run:
- I can’t do this.
- Why am I doing this?
- I probably should stop and stretch, my calves are a bit sore.
- It really is too early to be running. I should have listened to Mam.
- Maybe I should walk.
- I’m tired. I should take a break.
- Oh my god, I can’t believe I can do this again!
- I need to pee. I should have gone before leaving the house.
- I can’t believe I ran for 30 minutes.
- I can’t wait to run again. (Granted this thought came 30 minutes post-run)
Basically, it wasn’t perfect but I did it and six months on I have some level of fitness back – result!
