The incident took place at a private school
12 children and an adult have been hospitalised after a ceiling collapse in London.
The ceiling of a classroom in Rosemead Preparatory School and Nursery collapsed at 9.24 am.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident in Dulwich, South London.
A Year 3 class was in the room at the time of the incident.
London Fire Brigade confirmed they were called shortly after 9 am “to reports of an incident at Rosemead Preparatory School”.
Emergency services attended the scene, including 20 firefighters. Ambulance crews, a hazardous area response team, and a command support vehicle also attended the scene.
Emergency services treated 16 people for minor injuries at the school. 13 people, including 12 pupils were taken to hospital after the collapse.
Thankfully, their injuries are not life-threatening.
All of the staff and children at Rosemead have been accounted for and are safe and well.
An inspection was conducted and experts stressed that the building is safe and the day can continue as normal.
There is no further risk of collapse anywhere else in the building.
Rosemead Preparatory issued a statement after the shocking incident:
“This morning in one of our Year 3 classrooms, a ceiling collapsed resulting in the attendance of the emergency services.
“We are working closely with the authorities to understand the cause of the incident.”
“Parents and families can be reassured that the school day is continuing for the rest of the school.”
The staff at Rosemead vowed to do everything to support both pupils and their families.
Emergency services have been praised for their quick response.
