A new weather warning has been issued for five counties

Batten down the hatches.

Met Éireann have issued a new weather warning for five counties as the temperatures continue to get cooler.

The status yellow wind caution will come into effect at one minute past midnight on Friday and end at 9am the same day.

The warning will cover Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork and Kerry.

The weather forecasters have warned that in the coastal areas, winds will reach average speeds of 55 to 65 km/hr – with gusts up to 90 km/hr.

It comes as it is forecast to be dry overnight in most areas, with showers continuing in the west and southwest – before giving way to more persistent rain after midnight.

The rain will begin to move eastwards to most areas by dawn, with some fresh, gusty winds in the coastal areas.

Met Éireann have said that Friday morning will be wet, with rain spreading across the country.

As the afternoon goes on, the rain will gradually clear eastwards, with sunshine and showers following.

Temperatures will hit highs of 13C in some parts of the country, before turning dry and cold on Friday night.

It will begin to get a bit warmer again on Saturday, with temperatures of 12C to 14C – but, with low pressure nearby, there will still be widespread showers.
