Adult swaddling – the strangest new method mums are using to recover from childbirth

I have a very open mind – like wide open. But even this made me rethink the world just a little bit.

But horses for courses and all that or in this case…cocoons.

Therapists in Japan are wrapping patients up just like babies in a bid to make them feel secure as well as a way to ease aches and pains.

The ancient method of swaddling is proving quite popular amongst Japanese mothers who are wrapping themselves up in cloth to alleviate pain after giving birth.

Reuters reports that ‘Otonamaki’, which translates as “adult wrapping”, was devised by a Kyoto midwife who thought replicating the way children are wrapped up at birth may help mothers get over shoulder and hip pain after having babies.

It is said to improve posture and help with stiffness in the joints.

The five mothers at this recent session in Tokyo lay on their backs with their knees on their chests bundled up in white cloths.

The women are then gently rocked back and forwards.

But some chiropractor’s are cynical about the powers of adult swaddling. They have encouraged anyone with aches and pains after childbirth to visit their GP instead.

What do you make of it?
