Eleven-month-old Charlie Gard has passed away.
The news was confirmed by Charlie’s parents with his mother Connie saying:
“Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie.”
According to the Independent UK, Charlie passed away in a hospice under the terms of an end-of-life plan which had been put in place by a high-court judge.
Earlier this week, Charlie’s parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates made the decision to end his treatment after a five-month legal battle.
They released a statement which said:
“For Charlie, it’s too late, time has run out, the irreversible muscular damage has been done and the treatment can no longer be a success.
“Charlie has waited patiently for treatment. Due to delay, that window of opportunity has been lost”.
Charlie was born with a genetic condition referred to as mitochondrial depletion syndrome which affects a number of organs including the kidneys, brain and muscles.
The condition is very rare and in Charlie’s case, he could not eat or breathe on his own.
