Boy Drowns While Trying To Save Friend From River

A Kildare community is in mourning today after a schoolboy lost his life while trying to save his friend from the Lyreen River yesterday afternoon.

The thirteen-year-old was one of three youngsters, two boys and a girl, who were walking beside the water near the Kilcock Road in Maynooth, Co Kildare when the tragedy occurred.

According to reports, all three of the teens entered the water, with one attempting to save his friend before escaping the swell and alerting emergency services. The three pals were all taken to Our Lady’s Hospital for Children, Crumlin, where the boy was pronounced dead.

The two surviving children are said to be in a stable condition.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, local priest for the Maynooth area Fr Liam Rigney described the boy’s death as a “terrible tragedy”.
