Boys are more than twice as likely to be caught cheating in the Leaving Cert over girls.

Statistics released by the State Examinations Commission show that of those who had their Leaving Cert results withheld, over two-thirds were male.

The Commission was forced to withhold, or partially withhold, results from at least 38 students this year following the publication of round one offers.

The year before, 118 students’ results were withheld across the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert.

Cheating in state examinations has become more tempting for students in recent years due to the prevalence of smartphones, other electronic devices, and 4G.

Thirteen students achieved highest Leaving Cert marks this year, with top grades in eight subjects.
