Planning on writing your Christmas cards this week? This year, one incredibly special little girl would really appreciate if you could add her to your list.
Eight-year-old Safyre Terry is the sole survivor of a fatal arson fire that killed her father David Terry (32), her sister Layah (3), and her brothers Micheal (2) and Donavan (11 months) in 2013.
David shielded his daughter from the fire as long as he could. The fireman found her in his arms with her face buried in his chest.
Despite suffering horrific burns to 75 per cent of her body, Safyre is fighting her way back to health, enduring surgery after surgery (she has had more than 50 operations) in Rotterdam, New York, where she lives with her paternal aunt Liz Dolder.
Her injuries led to the loss of her right hand and her left foot. Safyre also faces constant problems with her mouth, where scar tissue tightens and makes eating and speaking difficult.
Despite all her troubles, Safyre is a happy and optimistic little girl who loves Christmas. This year, when she was given a Christmas card holder for her cards, she excitedly decided she was going to fill it up.
Her aunty took to social media to appeal for some help in making it happen, a call that was quickly picked up by the family’s many friends and well wishers…
And now cards are flooding in from all over the world, filling up Safyre’s Christmas card holder and making her day every time the postman arrives.
