World Book Day is here!

Children all around the world are dressing up as their favourite characters from books and spending some quality time reading books today.

Some celebrities have already shared pictures of their children in their costumes. Coleen and Wayne Rooney’s boys fully embraced the day with two of them dressing up as the BFG and one re-creating Peter Pan’s look.

Meanwhile, Amanda Holden’s daughter dressed up as Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch.

Michelle Heaton’s two children dressed as Belle and Captain America.

There has been a mixed reaction to World Book Day this year. What started out as a lighthearted celebration of books, has turned into a dreaded day for parents. The reason being that children are being encouraged to dress up as their favourite character from a book, which sounds great to theory, but has led to stress and upset.

It was felt that there was a lot of pressure put on childen (and their parents) to source proper store bought costumes or to buy items of clothing to make their own. Obviously, this isn’t practical as not everyone can afford to do so.

Meanwhile, some schools in the UK have even called on parents not to dress their kids up for the day this year.

It can be unfair to families who can’t afford costumes, according to a local councillor in Dundee, Scotland, who said his local school’s fancy dress effort would be “toned down” this year.

“This day will be used to inspire pupils to get reading and enjoy the benefits it brings for their education and wider life,” Cllr Gregor Murray told the Sun.

“I am also aware of the financial pressures that any fancy dress linked to the day can bring to some families.”
