The watchdog group Australian Competition and Consumer Comission (ACCC) have recalled counterfeit condoms, accidentally sold as part of a Groupon scheme last month. The faulty condoms were sold between March 12 and April 10 this year – some over a month ago – meaning that unsuspecting couples may already have used them.
A similar incident happened here in 2005 when it was discovered that thousands of fake condoms, thought to have been produced in China, were being sold in pharmacies and shops.
The recall notice was displayed on the ACCC website and stated that the defective products “may be counterfeit… with defects such as holes in the latex”, kind of exactly the opposite of what you want in your condoms.
The website went on to detail the hazards of using such products:
“The condoms may not prevent pregnancy or protect users against sexually transmitted diseases.”
The words ‘no’ and ‘sh*t’ spring to mind.
