Two brave cops have reunited a mum with her baby after rescuing the little girl in high flood waters in Texas.
Corporal Reed Clark was assigned to a high-water rescue team for children with urgent medical needs in Houston, Texas early last week.
Clark and his partner were headed to find a child with asthma, but had to abandon their car due to the high levels of flooding.
The two officers were able to borrow jet skis from a local citizen before taking off into the flooded streets again.
Corporal Clark told Today:
“The water was so high that we couldn’t see the street signs.
“I only knew to turn onto the street because I saw a light pole…the current was picking up very fast, like rapids almost.”
The officers continued to make the rounds after they successfully saved the asthmatic child.
It was during the rounds that Corporal Clark spotted a huge group of people making their way though water that had risen to their necks, holding duffle bags and boxes above their heads.
The officer recalled:
“They were screaming, ‘Baby! Baby!’
“I saw debris floating by, and I thought the baby was in the water … they saw me looking and pointed back to a woman holding what looked like a blanket.
“I turned around to come back, and the water went over her head.
“She held the baby above the water … I grabbed the baby and told her to [meet me at the designated rescue area].”
The officers continued their duty, bringing children to safety and letting parents know where they could go to join them.
But after a few hours, they had been notified that the baby still hadn’t been claimed.
Corporal Clark decided to shift his efforts to find the little girl’s mum, sharing a snap on Facebook to try and reunite the pair.
One of the mum’s friends saw the photo doing the rounds, after noticing she shared her own picture from a local shelter.
Local Constable Christopher Diaz updated social media users to reveal that the mother and daughter had been reunited.
And Corporal Clark was full of nothing but praise for the brave mum.
He added:
“She’s a true hero.
“She never said, ‘help me’ — she said, ‘get my baby out of here.'”
