“The nicest lad you could meet” – Tributes for Irish student who died on holiday in Greece

“This is just a terrible tragedy”

Tributes have been pouring in following the tragic death of Irish student Niall O’Brien, who died overnight in Greece.

Mr. O’Brien sadly passed away while holidaying on the Greek Island Ios.

It is believed the young man, aged in his 20s, was hit by a car after falling. He died from severe head injuries, according to reports.

His body has been taken to Athens, Greece for a post-mortem examination.

The young man has been remembered fondly as a passionate sportsman and “the nicest lad you could ever have met”.

O’Brien was studying at the University of Limerick and played with Broadford GAA Club in Co. Clare.

A source told The Irish Times: “This is just a terrible tragedy. Niall was the nicest lad you could ever have met, and the whole community just can’t believe what has happened.

Broadford GAA honoured O’Brien with a moving tribute.

“It is with a broken heart that Broadford Hurling Club are in deep mourning at the sad passing of one of our great characters and players, Niall O’Brien. The club would like to offer their deepest condolences to Mike, Anne, Cian, Eoin, Alan and the O’Brien and Boyce families.”

“Niall’s large circle of friends will remember him as a hugely popular, larger than life character. Niall was at the centre of every gathering, whether it be sporting or socially, and his good humour and witty comments kept everybody entertained. Both Broadford and Monaleen will be a much sadder place without him.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

O’Brien’ former principal Padraig Flanagan added: “It is with deep sadness that we learn of the sudden and very sad passing of former student Niall O Brien. Niall was a top student, a fine sportsman and a very popular member of our school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his devastated family and friends.”

It is believed neighbours and the local community have been comforting and supporting the O’Brien family during this traumatic time.
