Teenager dies in harrowing drowning incident in Co. Donegal

The teenager was swimming at a beach at Leadbh Gharbh.

A teenage boy has sadly passed away after drowning in Co. Donegal.

The 18-year-old, who was due to sit his Leaving Cert this year, was swimming with a friend.

The pair were swimming off Arranmore Island in Co Donegal when he got into difficulty.

It is believed the incident occurred shortly after 2 pm on Monday, January 3rd.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and removed the student from the water.

The Arranmore lifeboat fled to the scene of the incident at 2. 50 pm.

He was treated at the scene, but sadly it wasn’t enough to save his life.

Every effort was made to save the 18-year-old, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Garda spokesperson stated, “Gardaí and local emergency services responded to an incident earlier this afternoon, 3rd January 2021, on Arranmore Island, Co. Donegal.”

“A man, aged in his late teens, was removed from the water after he had gotten into difficulty.

“He received treatment from medics at the scene but was later pronounced dead.

“The body of the man will be taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date.”

The young man was a sixth-year student at a local secondary school.

Locals are said to be “numb” after news of the devastating death broke.

One person told The Irish Sun, “People on Arranmore are no strangers to tragedy over the years but it never gets any easier and especially at this time of the year.”
