Travel Chaos Looms as Luas Staff Stage First Ever Strike

Dublin commuters will be plunged into chaos tomorrow as Luas drivers bring the tram service to a dead stop for the first time in its history.

Staff, who have already started a work-to-rule, will stage a 48-hour strike from 4am tomorrow (Thursday) morning, followed by another 48-hour strike on Thursday week.

Luas drivers, office staff and ticket inspectors are demanding better pay and conditions, including improved overtime rates and bonuses. Despite the Luas drivers’ hourly rate of €20.83 (almost in line with that of Irish Rail drivers at €22.04) SIPTU members believe they are underpaid.

Approximately 90,000 commuters will be affected by the strike until normal services resume on Saturday at 6.30 am.
