Briton Richard Cushworth and his wife Mercedes Casanellas have been reunited with their lost son after other mothers that had given birth at the same hospital on the same day were DNA tested.
The new mother gave birth at 35 weeks by C-section when her husband was out of the country, and only briefly saw her newborn son before she was given an anaesthetic. When she was reunited with her newborn the next day, Ms Casanellas said she became suspicious as the baby seemed darker in skin colour than he did the previous day.
After three months, the couple’s fears were proven correct when a DNA test back in the US confirmed that the child they brought home from hospital was not biologically theirs.
After the couple launched an appeal to find Baby Jacob, and went on national television in El Salvador, investigators tracked down the child by ordering other new mothers, who gave birth at the same hospital Ms Casanellas did, to have their babies DNA tested.
