10 Things I’ve Learned About Motherhood: Beauty PR Anne Marie Foran Tells All

Since 2010, Anne Marie Foran has run AM Foran PR – a boutique PR agency specialising in beauty, health and lifestyle brands.

She has worked in the business for over 16 years but she started learning a new set of life lessons in 2012 following the birth of her son Dylan.

Here, in her own words, are 10 things that becoming a mum has taught her…

1. First and foremost, having a baby has made me appreciate my own mum and dad so much more. I was always thankful for my family upbringing but until I had Dylan, I probably never really understood the love, the education and the endless sacrifices. I am so much more grateful now.

2. I forgot just how much I loved ‘make believe’. A recent trip to the ‘restaurant’ had me eating a concoction of Playdough meatballs with fellow customer Mr. Dragon and it was top-drawer entertainment!

3. The lack of sleep might seem obvious, I know, but I haven’t slept past 6.30am in 3½ years. How did I not appreciate it more in my 20s? Probably because I was getting home at this time instead.

4. Did I actually teach you that?  The sense of pride when something I have taught my little fella actually clicks and he does it all by himself. My heart bursts at times.

5. The guilt. Everyday, at some point in the day, no matter how many gurus tell you to just “let it go,” somehow it creeps back in.

6. Cuddles at the start and end of the day are the new chocolate.

7. I didn’t know I would need a computer for a brain with the amount of questions being flung at me these days. A few recent brainteasers include “Where does the food in my stomach go?” and “Where is the moon in daytime?”

8. Okay, here comes the soppy bit… becoming a mum has made me love my husband even more.  Of course, everyday isn’t a Mary Poppins movie but his relationship with Dylan is so gorgeous to witness and something I am so blessed to have.

9. The work/life balance that people talk about is a myth in my opinion.  It really is about managing expectations and ensuring I try to end each week with a pat on the back, despite the pile up of laundry or dishes still left to do in the sink.

10. I am not a perfect mum. I worry. I wonder. I wish I had a crystal ball some days. But no one is perfect and not comparing myself to other mums (who undoubtedly are also feeling the same feelings) is the best lesson I have learnt so far. I’m sure there is a LOT more learning to come!
