Dad records heartbreaking messages for daughters after cancer diagnosis

A dad has decided to record a series of messages for his daughters because he “won’t be here” to see them grow up.

Steve Durrant was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2014.

The Bristol man was told that he might have just ten years to live, but that he “can’t control” what happens.

Steve has decided to record a series of messages for his daughters – three and seven-years-old – to try and make things easier for them once they are old enough to understand what is going on.

Steve said:

“Unfortunately, at three and seven years old, I won’t be here for a large part of their developmental years. It’s going to be tough when we have to tell them what’s going on.

“I plan to make a series of videos to tell them how much I love them and how much they mean to me. Give them something to look back on that isn’t going to be too painful for them.”

The 40-year-old dad also said that even though he has no control over the rate that the cancer spreads, he “can control what I do in the immediate future for my family.”

In the first video for his daughters, Steve says that they are watching because “we’ve had the conversation.”

He goes on:

“You probably noticed over the years I’ve been losing my hair and maybe been more tired. Not able to do some of the things that we wanted to do.

“I hope you didn’t notice any differences between me and other parents.

“I hope in some way I’ve provided you with a little inspiration because hopefully by now I’ve given you your wings and taught you to fly.

“Remember how it felt when I put my arm around you and held you close and pulled your head to my chest and told you that everything was going to be okay.”

Steve is currently training to run a half-marathon to raise money for Cancer Research UK and to generate awareness for those suffering.
