Mum asks for advice after her sister spells her child’s name in a ‘unique way’

What would you do?

A woman has asked for advice on Mumsnet after her sister gave birth to a baby boy… but decided to spell his name in a very odd way.

She doesn’t know whether to tell her sister that he’s going to have problems with teachers and friends spelling it, etc… or just leave her to it.

In the post, she wrote: “She has chosen a lovely name, but…has decided to spell it in a completely unique way (as it happens there are already two different spellings of the name, ie you can use either an a or an e). To my eyes her spelling just looks strange.

“Now my question- do I say anything to her? Along the lines of maybe think about her dc having to continually spell out/correct people re his name! I don’t want to upset or offend her so will keep if it zipped if that is the consensus!”

One mum said that while she isn’t keen on unique spellings, she does think she should stay out of it.

She wrote: “I’m not keen on yooneek spellings of names at all so I’m with you on that, but I really think you need to keep quiet on this one. I’m sure she’ll have put a lot of thought into the name and probably won’t appreciate your input.”

Another user wrote: “Rather than telling her, perhaps just ask her “what made you decide to spell it that way?” At least then you can come to understand whether it’s deliberate and if she’s considered the downsides.”

Most people agreed that she should spell her baby’s name the way she wants to, but what do you think mamas?
