Mum-of-three Liv Tyler has been sharing her top parenting tips, stories from her childhood, and why fathers play such an important role, in her latest interview.
The actress spoke about her life as the child of one of the world’s most famous rock stars, Steven Tyler, saying he taught her all the important lessons a father should.
“Fathers are very, very important in building the foundations and self-esteem of children,” she told GQ Dads.
“For me, the way that I was raised, consideration, courtesy and manners are really key and I think the father plays a big role in setting an example to children in how to behave out in the world and how to treat people.
“It’s a little bit different when it comes from the dad rather than the mum somehow.”
While Liv acknowledged the important role her father and her husband played in her life and the life of her children, she also admitted that good influence can come from anywhere and anyone.
“A lot of people don’t have fathers, but they might have someone in their life who’s a good male influence and support.
“There’s no cookie-cutter way of raising children and no family is the same, but the most important thing is that children are loved, supported and cared for, whether it’s coming from a relative or a friend or a grandfather or a good school teacher. Anyone.
“Children just need good examples and mentoring to teach them and show them how to do things.”
The 39-year-old also confirmed a feeling many of us have felt, and that’s pressure to be perfect. The mum says she’s learnt to stop comparing herself to other parents and believe she is doing her best.
“People are way too hard on themselves. Comparing yourself to other people can be damaging; the most important thing is just to be you and to try to engage with your child.
“We put so much pressure on ourselves as parents to be able to do everything, but children are very grateful and understanding. I ways find that quality time, even if you just get a little bit, really has a deep impact.
“But you also need them to know that they can make mistakes, and if they do make a mistake it’s OK for them to tell you and that they’ll get a second chance.”
