A US retail company is helping to normalise breastfeeding in public by educating its staff in a very simple but effective way.
Breastfeeding Mama Talk posted Target’s public breastfeeding policy to its Facebook page yesterday, with the caption, “Kudos to Target for their breastfeeding friendly policy. Other businesses should take note. Please share this everywhere especially on the Facebook pages of the businesses known to discriminate against breastfeeding!”
The post has since been shared almost 13,000 times, with many women telling their own stories of breastfeeding in the store. One mum wrote, “About a month ago I was nursing my daughter and a customer went and got a manager, brought them to where I was nursing (in the men’s section with my husband, covered up) and complained. The manager apologised to me and explained to the LADY that I was allowed to feed my baby where ever I am comfortable doing so. And proceeded to explain to the lady that if she didn’t like it, don’t watch.”
Proving that the policy really is put into practise, another comment read, “I used to work for target. It wasn’t just for the guests they even had a special mommy room for breastfeeding employees. They was a fridge, rocking chair, radio, the whole nine yard. It was amazing.”
With so many stories about mums being shamed for (or told to stop) breastfeeding in public, this really is refreshing to hear. Like the Facebook caption reads, other businesses should take note.
