In the market for a buggy? Choosing a model that’s right for you can be a bit of a minefield – there’s SO much to think about – not to mention that it’s probably one of the biggest purchases you’ll make for your baby (no pressure, like).
With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of some of the main criteria to consider when going buggy shopping.
Function
Can you easily open and fold the buggy? Make sure you have this sussed before you leave the shop, so you don’t find yourself stuck in a car park trying to get the goddamn thing down. (This can happen.)
Weight
Once you’ve mastered the above, pick up the folded buggy to check the weight of it. If you use a car, you’re likely to be lifting it in and out of the boot a lot. Speaking of which…
Size
Will the folded buggy fit into the boot of your car? Also think about where you’re going to be storing the buggy when you’re not using it – how much space do you have to play with?
Engineering
Where will you be using your buggy? Whether it’s on country roads, sandy beaches, or muddy fields, think about the wheels and suspension. Off-roaders, for example, will prefer a stationary wheel; whereas a swivel wheel is better for weaving in and out of crowds in a city. Also, do you want a hand or foot-operated brake?
Demo
Take the buggy for a test drive while you’re in the shop. Try popping up the front wheels, as if you are stepping onto a kerb.
Height
Who’s going to be using the buggy? Do you need a model that has a handle with an adjustable height?
Style
You’ll be looking at this buggy for a long time so aesthetics are important. Make sure you choose a model that will please your eye now and in the future.
Potential
Will your buggy need to grow with the family? If so, pick a model that allows this – some buggies let you attach boards for toddlers to stand on, for example. There are also options to switch between forward-facing and parent-facing as the child gets older.
Storage
The buggy basket is one of the features that can often be overlooked. Make sure there’s enough room for things like a changing bag, some shopping, coats, toys, or any other paraphernalia that you might find yourself carting around when out and about.
Extras
Think about any accessories – cup holder, footmuff, rain cover, etc – that you might want to add on to the buggy at some point. You might also consider investing in a travel system, which includes a carrycot, buggy and car seat; all of which can be attached to the same buggy frame.
Shop around
There are plenty of deals to be had so make sure you visit different shops and see what’s out there.
