Lots of us are absolute magpies for pretty gems and now it looks like that obsession is set to spill over into our choice of baby names.
Names inspired by precious stones are on the rise and are predicted to be big in 2019.
Name website Nameberry forecasts that monikers like Amethyst, Peridot, Sapphire, and Topaz are going to become super trendy next year.
It’s not, as the site points out, all that new of a phenomenon.
Names like Pearl, Ruby and Amber began to rise in popularity at the start of the 20th century but this trend focuses on more unusual stones.
Here are the gem-inspired baby names predicted to be huge in 2019.
- Amethyst – The birthstone for February, the ancient Greeks believed that it protected against drunkenness.
- Jet – A mineraloid that inspired the term ‘jet black’.
- Sapphire – The birthstone for September, it’s originally of Hebrew origin.
- Emerald – Believed by the ancient Egyptians to open one’s heart to wisdom and love and to be good for strengthening relationships
- Onyx – A crystal thought by some to protect the body and mind from harmful energies.
- Topaz – Associated with luck and with healing and energising.
- Garnet – The birth stone for January.
- Opal – This comes from Sanskrit and literally means ‘gem’.
- Jasper – A Persian word that means ‘bringer of treasure’. The stone is associated with courage and wisdom.
- Peridot – The birth stone for August, it was seen in some ancient cultures as a symbol of the sun.
- Jade – A healing stone associated with health and vitality.
