Some of Ireland’s most influential parents share their ‘back to school’ tips

The majority of schools across Ireland will be back in session from next week.

Getting back into the swing of things can take a while for both parents and kids but there are ways to make the transition from summer to school easier.

Parenting bloggers Ellen O’Keefe, Eimear Hutchinson and Becky O’Haire were asked by Batchelor’s what advice they would give to parents getting back into the flow of the school run and these were their top back to school tips.

Today we went for an adventure walk! To the naked eye it might appear to simply be a walk. But we bring our discovery explorers kit & our imagination along & it magically becomes an adventure! ?? We we’re off on a proper exploration. And we collected samples to examine along the way & thoroughly enjoyed while also getting our exercise in for #mydaily30 ?? Use that hashtag for your activity / exercise posts & join our new community with me & @empty_nest_mummy ? ???? Ps don’t mock the fanny pack / bum bag, it’s the bestest for walks without pockets ?? * #mydaily30 #adventurewalk #adventureland #adventurewalks #heartfluttermoments #rememberingthesedays #HappyLittleButtons #whatevertheweatherkids #curiouslittleexplorers #letkidsbekids #mumswithcameras #childrenoftheworld #childhoodunplugged #simplykids #cherisheverymoment #candidchildhood #letthembelittle #outdoorkids

Kids get used to staying up late in the summer and if they start back into the school routine without adjusting their bed and wake schedule, it can be a rocky first week back with very sleepy heads. Slowly bring bedtime back to normal over the week before school starts by waking the kids a bit earlier each morning and putting them to bed a little earlier each night.

Have a hearty after-school snack ready for the kids, especially for those first few weeks back. When kids are adjusting back to school they might not eat as much lunch in school as they would at home, which means they can come back really hungry after school and get into the habit of constant snacking. Simple things like eggs, toast, beans, pasta and soups are quick and also filling, and cut out the snacking.

Jesus the effort this summer to get out for a day, i feel like I need a little trailer to drag round behind me with raincoats, sunscreen, sun hats, rain hats, umbrellas, change of clothes, water bottles, snacks, food for Alice, nappies, wipes the list goes on! We hit for @fotawildlife today and of course being the genius that I am, able to predict weather and all that, I looked at the sky and thought nah we don't need all the rain jackets I went to the effort of packing. So we left them in the car and got absolutely soaked ? but as the girls said, as they were literally singing in the rain (swipe over, cutest and most appropriate song ever!), 'it's only water Mum' ?‍♀️ yes it is and sure if that was going to stop us this summer we'd end up going no where! . . We've had some nice days out over the last few weeks @doneraileestateopw @leahysopenfarm, the playground in Lismore (love it there!), @visitthefarm in Grenagh, had a look round @ballyhass_aquaparks but you need to be over 8 for there. . . We only have a few free days left before the end of the summer because some of the girls are away again next week so if you had one place in Cork/Waterford/South Tipp you'd recommend for a day trip where would it be??? . . If you put a gun to my head and made me chose I'd have to say @leahysopenfarm is my favourite it's such a treasure trove of a place, always something new to find and even after a full day there the girls still have things left they didn't get to do!! . . #mumoffour #mumofgirls #mumslife #irishblogger #irish_daily #momblogger #stylemum #dresslikeamum #mumstyle #schoolholidays #summertime #irelandoutdoors #daysoutwithkids

Make sure your kids are empowered – make sure they are able to put on their coats by themselves, put on their shoes (buy velcro if they can’t tie their laces), make sure they are able to open their lunchboxes and drinks bottles themselves and unwrap or peel whatever food they have. It makes them more independent and it makes their teacher’s life a lot easier too!

Organise your entrance and exit area – have a place where, the night before, you have pairs of shoes lined up, coats are on a hook that children can reach themselves and bags are packed. There is nothing more frustrating than a missing shoe just as you are about to head out the door.

Have a backup supply of rubbers, pencil sharpeners, colouring pencils, crayons, rulers etc, even if they’re labelled these items seem to disappear into thin air with a frequency that’s unparalleled.

Prepare as much as possible the night before. By having the uniforms ready and lunches packed you can enjoy a cup of tea before heading out the door instead of frantically looking under beds for a school tie.

Be inspired not intimidated. There are lots of fab resources online to inspire school lunches, breakfasts, etc. They are a great way to get ideas and motivations but tailor it to your situation. Remember to keep it realistic and don’t put yourself under any extra pressure.
