Gardaí issue advice for driving in snow showers today

Take care today folks.

A lot of us have woken up to the roads covered in snow tosay. The east is the worst affected by Storm Emma but Met Eireann says that it will soon spread to other areas of the country and is expected to get worse towards the weekend.

There is a Red status weather warning in place for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath with more snowfall expected to reach 25cm by midday Thursday.

Meanwhile, an Orange status weather warning remains in place for Wexford, Cork and Waterford and a Yellow one for Kilkenny, Longford, Wexford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.

The general advice would be to not make any unnecessary journeys today, but if you really have to then the Gardaí have issued some advice.

On Twitter, they said:

“When driving in snow showers during daylight hours, use dipped headlights ( not day time running lights) reduce speeds and increase braking distance. Pedestrians use footpaths where provided appreciate drivers may have difficulty stopping in snowy conditions.”
