Raising Toddlers: The 8 Murphy’s Laws

"That's just typical"

As the mum of a toddler, I find myself saying the words “that’s just typical” on a daily basis.

I used to think that my toddler had bad timing, but I’m quickly realising that she’s just letting me know who’s in charge around here. (Hint: it’s not either of the adults.)

Here are eight things that I find always happen with a toddler…

1. They need their nappy changing JUST as you leave the house with them.

It’s probably all the excitement about going out.

2. They fall STRAIGHT to sleep for whoever is babysitting.

Unlike when you put them to bed and they try anything to stay awake.

3. They stop whatever amazing or hilarious thing they are doing the SECOND you grab the camera.

All the encouragement in the world isn’t going to make them do it again.

4. The second you look away they do something AMAZING.

But you’ll never know what it is because they stop when you look.

5. They sleep in on a weekday and wake early at the weekend.

It’s inevitable really.

6. They will decide they hate their favourite food right after you’ve spent ages preparing it.

Maybe they just lost their appetite…

7. When you don’t bring the buggy with you, they will want (or need) to be carried.

And it will be pouring with rain, obviously.

8. The second you feel exasperated they do something adorable.

And you feel like a terrible parent, naturally.
